TINKERBELL

7-21-08 Tinkerbell was dropped off at a local shelter by her owner.   They said she was coughing and couldn't afford to take her to the vet.  We took her to Dr. Blackburn and he did a complete exam and found her to be healthy.  She was spayed, got all of her shots and went to a foster home.  Her foster Mom noticed she drank water constantly and didn't have any interest in eating.  She took her back to the vet on 7-24 and she is still there.  She is eating now and they have tested her for several types of diabetes and that's not it.  They are doing more tests this and now it's just "wait and see."  With all that said, she is soooo sweet.  If you would like to make a donation to help with Tinkerbell's expenses it would be greatly appreciated..

We’ve done extensive tests and we found out she has diabetes, but it’s not sugar diabetes.  The following is a brief description of her condition..

Diabetes insipidus (DI) is a metabolic disorder in which dogs demonstrate a severe overproduction of urine. The most common form of DI is called central DI, and is due to insufficient production of anti-diuretic hormone (ADH), a hormone responsible for concentrating the urine into a small volume..

The medication is typically given through the nostrils, but that won’t work well on a Pug; so she is getting eye drops.  The drops are used to control excessive thirst and the passage of an abnormally large amount of urine.   She’s been on that for a couple of weeks and it’s helped some, but she still pee’s a lot.

Since the drops weren’t working as well as the vet had hoped he did more testing.  Now because of her bile acid levels he feels she needs a liver shunt.  This is a birth defect that allows blood to bypass the liver, reducing the body’s ability to make proteins, store sugars and remove toxins form the bloodstream. A few years ago when we got a rescue (Hannah, AKA Gidget)  that needed the surgery.  It was a huge undertaking for us, but we had the surgery done in Knoxville, at UT.

It was both costly and a long distance from here but it was a success and we want to offer Tinkerbell the same chance to live a long happy life.

Tinkerbell went to her foster home today!  She is doing great with the other pets and quickly learned to use the doggie door.  Her surgery is scheduled for 9-2-08.  The surgery will be done by Dr. Dew here in Memphis.

If you would like to make a donation to help with Tinkerbell's expenses it would be greatly appreciated.

The cost of the surgery is $2,150.00.  As of 8-25-08 we have raised 555.00
